ENG 115: Nicest Thing (Kate Nash)

Here's a great song to practice wish + verb (past).
Wish is used for imaginary or impossible things

Nicest Thing (Kate Nash)

All I know is that you're so nice
You're the nicest thing I've seen
I wish that we could give it a go
See if we could be something

I wish I was your favourite girl
I wish you thought I was the reason you are in the world
I wish my smile was your favourite kind of smile
I wish the way that I dress was your favourite kind of style

I wish you couldn't figure me out
But you'd always wanna know what I was about
I wish you'd hold my hand when I was upset
I wish you'd never forget the look on my face when we first met

I wish you had a favourite beauty spot that you loved secretly
'Cause it was on a hidden bit that nobody else could see
Basically, I wish that you loved me
I wish that you needed me
I wish that you knew when I said two sugars, actually I meant three

I wish that without me your heart would break
Yeah, I wish that without me you'd be
Spending the rest of your nights awake
I wish that without me you couldn't eat
Yeah, I wish I was the last thing on your mind before you went to sleep

Look, all I know is that
You're the nicest thing I've ever seen
And I wish we could see if we could be something
Yeah, I wish we could see if we could be something

ENG 115: My Wish (Rascal Flatts)

Here's a song to practice hope + verb (present).
Hope is used for possible situations

My Wish (Rascal Flatts)

I hope that days come easy
And moments pass slow
And each road leads you
Where you want go

And if you're faced with a choice
And you have to choose
I hope you choose the one
That means the most to you

And if one door opens
To another door closed
I hope you keep on walkin'
Till you find the window

If it's cold outside
Show the world the warmth of your smile
More than anything
More than anything

My wish for you
Is that this life becomes
All that you want it to
Your dreams stay big
And your worries stay small
You never need to carry
More than you can hold
And while you're out there
Getting where you're getting to

I hope you know somebody loves you
And wants the same things too
Yeah, this, is my wish

I hope you never look back
But you never forget
All the ones who love you
In the place you left

I hope you always forgive
And you never regret
And you help somebody every chance you get
Oh, you find God's grace, in every mistake
And you always give more than you take

Oh, more than anything
Yeah, and more than anything

My wish for you
Is that this life becomes
All that you want it to
Your dreams stay big
And your worries stay small
You never need to carry more than you can hold
And while you're out there getting
Where you're getting to

I hope you know somebody loves you
And wants the same thing too
Yeah, this, is my wish

My wish, for you
Is that this life becomes
All that you want it
To your dreams stay big
And your worries stay small
You never need to
Carry more than you can hold
And while you're out there getting
Where you're getting to

I hope you know somebody loves you
And wants the same things too

Yeah, this, is my wish
This is my wish

ENG 115: I Hope You Dance (Ronan Keating)

Here's a song to practice hope + verb (present).
Hope is used for possible situations

I Hope You Dance (Ronan Keating)

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger

May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances but they're worth taking
Loving might be a mistake but it's worth making
Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance (time is a wheel in constant motion always)
I hope you dance (rolling us along)
I hope you dance (tell me who wants to look back on the years and wonder)
I hope you dance (where those years have gone)

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

Dance (time is wheel in constant motion always)
I hope you dance (rolling us along)
I hope you dance (tell me who wants to look back on the years and wonder)
I hope you dance (where those years have gone)

I hope you dance
I hope you’re dancing
I hope you’re dancing
I pray you’re dancing
I hope you dance

ENG 115: Present Perfect Simple x Present Perfect Continuous

Being Around (The Lemonheads)

Here's another song to practice the Second Conditional
It's dramatic and exaggerated (and disgusting!), but it shows lots of question examples of
"If + subject + verb (past), would + subject + verb (base form)?"

In the Second Conditional, we use the form were for the verb BE, including I, he, she and it
(If I were; If he were; If she were; If it were)
In spoken language, however, the verb form was is pretty accepted.

Being Around (The Lemonheads)
If I was in the fridge, would you open the door?
If I was the grass, would you mow your lawn?
If I was your body, would you still wear clothes?
If I was a booger, would you blow your nose?
Would you keep it? Would you eat it?
I'm just tryin to give myself a reason, for being around.

If I was the front porch swing would you let me hang?
If I was the dance floor would you shake your thing?
If I was a rubber check would you let me bounce
Up and down inside your bank account?
Would ya trust me, not to break you?
I'm just tryin really hard to make you,
Notice me being around.

If I was a haircut would you wear a hat?
If I was a maid, could I clean your flat?
If I was the carpet would ya wipe your feet,
In time to save me from mud off the street?
If you like me, if you love me,
Why don't you get down on your knees
And scrub me?
I'm a little grubby
From being around.
