This song is a tribute to John Lennon, who was shot to death in 1980 by a deranged fan. Elton John's wordsmith Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics, but Elton certainly felt a connection to the song, as he was good friends with Lennon and is the Godfather of Lennon's second son, Sean. Elton performed on several of Lennon's songs and even appeared onstage with him at his final concert in 1974.
John Lennon was born (be born) on October 9, 1940, in Liverpool, England. He met (meet) Paul McCartney in 1957 and invited (invite) McCartney to join his music group. They eventually formed (form) the most successful songwriting partnership in musical history. Lennon left (leave) the Beatles in 1969 and later released (release) albums with his wife, Yoko Ono, among others. On December 8, 1980, a crazy fan named Mark David Chapman killed (kill) him with gunshots.
